LOST AND FOUND

posted Wednesday, 7 September 2005

My world was shook today.  It shook for about 45 minutes.  Those were the minutes that my 6 year old grandson J was missing.  For some reason J and his father didn't see each other as he left school.  He decided to try to walk home and became lost.

Once he was found (and my heart began beating again) I decided to give them some time to talk it all out then I would call later to get the full scoop.  After a couple of hours passed I called to see what had happened.  My daughter who has a nasty case of flu was lying down sleeping so I asked to speak with J.  Here is the basic conversation:

J:   Hi Grandma Sarah

Me:  Hi Baby, I heard you got lost today.

J:     Yes I did

Me:  Can you tell me what happened.

J:   I came out of school and I didn't see my Dad by the fence so I tried to walk    home.  I thought I knew how to get home but I don't and I got really lost.

Me:  That must have been scary, were you scared?

J:  Oh yes Grandma, I was scared.  I was scared and hungry and crying

Me:  But the good thing is your Daddy found you.

J:  Yes, he found me by the lady's house

Me: What lady J?

J:  The lady that was asking the mailmain where my street was?

Me:  Oh good, so you remembered your address and told them?

J:  (proudly) yep

Me:  Know what J, I was really scared when I found out you were gone. I left work and came to look for you.  I was going to find you.

J:  I know, my Mom told me.  You were looking for me, and Daddy and Aunt S and the school and 3 police cars.  They were ALL looking for me Grandma. (said like it made him feel safe that so many were looking for him.  I remember thinking Dear God in heaven this boy now feels safe and believes that there will always be someone to help him.  God, don't ever let him down.)

We chatted a bit more, then did our little game of "I love you bigger", " No, I love YOU bigger".  As I was about to hang up he said "wait Grandma!", then he proceeded to tell me the name of the city where he lives.  He said, " if I ever get lost again that's where you need to find me, in that city...Okay?"  I smiled with tears rolling down my face and said you bet..if you get lost, I look for you there.
